What to do when you grow up….

What are you going to do when you grow up?

What a question.

That is a question I can only assume is plaguing not only me, but probably many of you as well. Some people would say that I have a pretty good life with a good job, and I would agree. I have an excellent life and I do have a great job, but it’s not a fulfilling job. In case you didn’t know, I am an operating room nurse and have been for the last 5 years now. Prior to becoming a nurse I was a paramedic in San Diego for 7 years and at the time I had the goal of becoming a firefighter. After working side by side with the fire department for 7 years I decided I didn’t want to work 24-hour shifts for the rest of my life. That’s where nursing school came in. I was already in the medical field, nurses typically work 3 12-hour shifts a week with 4 days off, and being someone who enjoys getting outside, camping and climbing, I figured that was a great schedule. So I went to nursing school and I got lucky enough to get hired straight into the operating room in 2015.

Fast forward and I have now been an operating room nurse for 5 years and am finding myself once again wondering what I’m going to do when I grow up. Working for the man, making someone else rich is not what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. I do have a list of things I think I’d like to do and they go like this…….

  1. Not work anymore.
  2. open a climbing/fitness/yoga gym
  3. become an RN first assist
  4. get into legal nurse consulting

Now clearly there has to be a plan in order to not work anymore, and there needs to be a plan for all of the other items on the list. The question is which one is going to allow us to work as little as possible and play as much as possible???? This is certainly not a unique question, nor are theses unique thoughts I’m having, but I don’t know when the last time I put any goals down on paper, so I figured this might be a good place to start.

Anybody else having these thoughts and questions coming up again?
